What is a Browser Helper Object?
A Browser Helper Object (BHO) is a type of plugin that runs automatically every time you start up Internet Explorer. These objects can range from simple tools that add a toolbar button or context menu entry, to complete programs that take over your entire browser.
Internet Explorer 7 and 8 include a new security feature, called Low Rights IE, that is designed to prevent malicious BHOs from running. When you install an IE7 or IE8 update that has Low Rights IE turned on, any BHOs that are not specifically marked as being compatible with the new security feature will be disabled.
If you’re not sure whether a BHO is installed on your machine, you can check using the registry editor. To do this, open the registry editor (type “regedit” into the Start Menu search box and hit Enter) and then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects
If there are any entries in this key, then a BHO is installed on your machine. The registry entry will tell you the name and path of the DLL that implements the BHO.
If you want to remove a BHO from your machine, you can do so using the Add/Remove Programs control panel. Go to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, select the “Show updates” checkbox at the top of the window, and then scroll down the list until you find the updates for Internet Explorer.
Select the checkbox next to the IE update that you want to remove, and then click the “Remove” button. This will uninstall the selected IE update, and also disable any BHOs that were installed as part of that update.
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper ObjectsCitation
How to Remove Spyware from Your Computer
Spyware is any software that gathers information about a person or organization without their knowledge. It can be used for many purposes, including advertising, stealing personal information, or gathering information about users without their permission. Spyware can be installed on computers without users’ knowledge, or it can be installed with their knowledge but without their consent.
There are many ways to remove spyware from your computer. Some spyware can be removed by uninstalling the associated program. For example, if you install a free game and it comes with spyware, you can remove the spyware by uninstalling the game. Other types of spyware, however, are more difficult to remove.
If you think you may have spyware on your computer, you can use an anti-spyware program to scan your computer for spyware and remove it. Many anti-spyware programs are available for free. You can also use Windows Defender, which is a free anti-spyware program that is included with Windows.
If you cannot remove the spyware yourself, you can contact a professional to help you.
